Word! Symposium

Word! A Symposium of Talk, Poetry, & Performance

Edmonton Cultural Capital partners with Grant MacEwan College to explore the many connections between everyday life, poetry, art, performance and the spoken word. Sessions will cover:

  • Page to the stage – how different poets work across the borders of their art form, into fiction, songs and stand-up poetry.
  • Poetry and the Wider World – how poetry connects with science, politics and poverty.
  • Hear this! Live and Personal – how poets connect with audiences
  • Learning the art of … – how poets learn the craft that gives their words power.

There will be interactive activities and discussions and thought-provoking fun.

One of the keynote speakers will be Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel Prize chemistry winner, poet and playwright. Word! Symposium will also present the North American Premier performance (September 21) of his acclaimed play Should’ve, a riveting drama about survival, ethical conflicts - and the social responsibility of scientists and artists. This production will be produced by Daniel van Heyst and directed by Stephen Heatley, with participation from Kings University College, Edmonton.
